It\u2019s getting to be that time of year again when retention notices are sent home from schools or when parents wring their hands wondering if their children can actually take on a more difficult school year, when this one hasn\u2019t even been mastered.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a lot to think about, but the truth is that another year of presenting information in the same manner that didn\u2019t work all year, probably won\u2019t do much good.\u00a0 And, the horrible part of it is that it will do harm to the child\u2019s self-esteem.<\/p>\n
If your child is in kindergarten, then retention might be a possibility, as there are developmental stages that can be play a role.\u00a0 An extra year can truly make a difference.\u00a0 However, if your child is older, it\u2019s best to seek out other alternatives.\u00a0 Research backs this up!<\/p>\n
So, if you\u2019re thinking about holding your child back, take a breath and go over the pros and cons. If a teacher or administrator is pushing for this, then ask yourself why. \u00a0Try to reach a solution together, if possible, but always know that there are alternatives and solutions for every problem.<\/p>\n
Enjoy the beautiful spring weather and take a deep breath.\u00a0 Every day, kids overcome learning difficulties and master a school year that had previously been difficult. Yours can, too!<\/p>\n
