{"id":1304,"date":"2021-05-14T09:57:14","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T07:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/?p=1304"},"modified":"2026-06-17T10:42:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:42:26","slug":"why-boys-need-to-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/?p=1304","title":{"rendered":"Why boys need to move"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Why boys need to move<\/h2>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"626\" src=\"http:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/rush-1822566_1280-1-1024x626.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/rush-1822566_1280-1-1024x626.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/rush-1822566_1280-1-300x183.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/rush-1822566_1280-1-768x469.jpg 768w, http:\/\/dyslexiasa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/rush-1822566_1280-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>I feel like one of those old people crabbing about the way things were \u201cback in the good ole\u2019 days\u201d.\u00a0 For years, I\u2019ve stood on my soap box proclaiming that learning disabilities are on the rise, and a huge reason for this is because we\u2019ve lost our \u201csand box\u201d kindergartens where children painted, marched, sang songs, and learned to read at their own pace.\u00a0 In essence, they (gasp) moved, got out of their seats, exercised, and here\u2019s the best part: were happy!<\/p>\n<p>Today, young learners, both male and female, are forced to digest a sour bowl of academic mush every school day.\u00a0 They rarely leave their seats, and those who need the most exercise, boys, generally miss recess for incomplete work or as punishment for impulsive \u201cboy\u201d behavior.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also been shouting to anyone who listens that schools are trying to turn our boys into girls, complacent little darlings who sit with their ankles crossed, raising their hands in delight at the possibility of answering a question correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine my delight when I found out there is research to back up my claims!<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Finland analyzed measurements of physical activity and sedentary time of students ages 6 to 8.\u00a0 The studies used heart-rate and movement sensors as these kids were given standardized tests in reading and math.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that lower levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity, higher levels of sedentary time, and particularly, their combination, were related to poorer reading skills in boys,\u201d the study stated.<\/p>\n<p>This study says it loud and clear.\u00a0 Boys performed poorly in reading with limited or no physical activity. But, what does this mean for those of us who knew this all along, who have little boys who have been or still are forced to sit when their bodies are telling them they need movement, crave it to keep their brains stimulated?\u00a0 Should we put them on harsh medication to keep them down and easy to handle?<\/p>\n<p>Or, should we all take the higher road and let boys be boys?<\/p>\n<p>To your child\u2019s success,<\/p>\n<p>Lisa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, young learners, both male and female, are forced to digest a sour bowl of academic mush every school day.
