For most people, school is in session now, and this can be quite emotional for kids with learning issues.\u00a0 A new teacher, a new set of classroom rules, and often, a new set of friends can spike fear and anxiety through a child.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I thought it would be a good idea to give you a set of classroom strategies to share with your child\u2019s teacher.<\/p>\n

The Strategies:<\/p>\n
* Establish eye contact and speak to the student\u2019s level.<\/p>\n
* Use a cueing system to get the student\u2019s attention when distracted. (signal, code word, etc.)<\/p>\n
* Allow preferential seating away from distractions. (doors, windows, loud students, etc.)<\/p>\n
* Provide a quiet place for the student to work. (minimize distractions)<\/p>\n
* Allow the student to use earplugs\/headphones to block out distractions while doing seat work.<\/p>\n
* Use an FM system or amplification system if possible. (if not available, speak loudly, clearly and slowly)<\/p>\n
* Use books, worksheets, and other materials with large print, especially when writing on whiteboard.<\/p>\n
* Provide directions in a simple manner. (two-three steps maximum, uncomplicated and direct)<\/p>\n
* Repeat directions several times in various ways and write down for the student if necessary.<\/p>\n
* Provide multiple examples and point out important visual information to the student.<\/p>\n
* Never force the student to read out loud in front of the class.<\/p>\n
* Use modeling during lessons and leave visual aids on the whiteboard or in front of the student during seat work.<\/p>\n
* repeat and paraphrase directions, then ask him to repeat them back to you<\/p>\n
* Give the student time to read quietly or repeat directions to himself (sub-vocalize), especially if checking for comprehension.<\/p>\n
* Preview, review and summarize all new and previous lessons.<\/p>\n
* Give short breaks between activities to minimize fatigue.<\/p>\n
* Allow extended time to complete tasks.<\/p>\n
* Modify workload and avoid timed tests\/activities.<\/p>\n
* Assign homework that specifically reinforces concepts taught that day.<\/p>\n
* Use larger lined paper and highlight areas for answers or writing; a fat pencil can also help writing problems.<\/p>\n
* Create an outline of ideas before giving writing assignments.<\/p>\n
* Use a paper to cover text while the student is reading or doing worksheets so he\/she can focus on one line at a time.<\/p>\n
