Kids with learning issues have a host of behaviors they use just to cope with life, and they look to adults to help them navigate through this maze of fear.<\/p>\n<p>If you threaten to take action with a child with learning issues, you\u2019d better be prepared to follow through with the threat.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t, you\u2019ll lose this kid.\u00a0 I see this as the one thing that trips up parents and educators alike.\u00a0 Suddenly, when it\u2019s time to discipline, you see how cute the child is, how sweet he usually is, how she didn\u2019t really mean it\u2026the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>Following are some steps both parents and teachers can do to stop the behavior blues.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>State the unwanted behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Give a choice for the unwanted behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Give a consequence to the child that entails both a positive and a negative.<\/li>\n<li>Follow through with the consequence and the reward.<\/li>\n<li>Be consistent.<\/li>\n<li>Stay calm.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Six easy steps.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0\u00a0 Here\u2019s an example of how this might work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissy.\u00a0 You are whining.\u00a0 There\u2019s a better way to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you continue to whine, you\u2019ll have to go to time out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can continue to whine or you can choose to use a nice voice.\u00a0 If you use your nice voice, you won\u2019t have to go to time out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, Missy.\u00a0 I see that you\u2019re still whining.\u00a0 You\u2019ll have to go to time out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, Missy.\u00a0 You stopped whining.\u00a0 Now you can watch a video of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all it takes to help turn your child or student\u2019s bad behavior around.\u00a0 Like I said, just be cautious of empty threats.\u00a0 These kids need you to be in charge of their scary world, and if they are given too much power, they only become more afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Happy disciplining,<\/p>\n<p>Lisa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As summer comes to a close, many of you might be stressed about a new teacher for your child.
