Dysgraphia has many different components, and it takes a comprehensive approach to put all the pieces together to enable a student the ability to write.<\/p>\n
After motor skills and perceptual skills are in place, it\u2019s important for the student to have the ability to write.\u00a0 This includes a proper pencil grip.\u00a0 Most kids with dysgraphia retain an improper pencil grip.\u00a0 This slows them down, as it is cumbersome.\u00a0 In addition, what makes it worse is that these same kids are now in the habit of holding a pencil in the wrong way.\u00a0 Just try teaching them the proper pencil grip, and you\u2019ll be met with resistance!<\/p>\n
Following are some tips to help your child retain a proper pencil grip.<\/p>\n
* Use a pencil gripper.\u00a0 My favorite are the ones that are three-pronged and the child\u2019s fingers fit naturally in the grip.<\/p>\n
* Use fat pencils to start with.\u00a0 This is easier for the student to wrap his\/her fingers around the pencil in a proper manner.<\/p>\n
* Go to a sporting goods store and find hand exercisers. These will help strengthen the muscles in the hand that encourage proper pencil grip.<\/p>\n
* Make it a game.\u00a0 For every time your child uses the proper pencil grip, he\/she gets a point.\u00a0 Five points equal a reward of some kind.<\/p>\n
* Refrain from nagging.\u00a0 That only frustrates the student.<\/p>\n
* Explain the reasoning behind the proper pencil grip.\u00a0 These kids are smart and often just need a reason to make necessary changes.<\/p>\n
* Practice \u201cpinching\u201d with the thumb and index finger.\u00a0 After \u201cpinching\u201d has been mastered, practice picking up objects with the \u201cpinching\u201d method.\u00a0 Transition to a pencil.<\/p>\n
Whatever you do, don\u2019t allow your child or student to maintain an improper pencil grip.\u00a0 This will only hold him\/her back in the journey to write well.<\/p>\n
