More help with writing success<\/h2>\n

So, we have been working on those writing skills that seem to plague so many students these days. Today I want to add another step.<\/p>\n

By now, we have strengthened motor skills and have practiced writing by using your words instead of the student\u2019s.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s time for the student to write.<\/p>\n

Find a picture that the student is interested in.\u00a0 If your child loves motorcycles, then simply find a picture of a motorcycle.\u00a0 There are many free sites that offer pictures.\u00a0 Just be careful that you don\u2019t violate an artist\u2019s copyright.<\/p>\n

After you find a picture, have your child look at it and write what he\/she sees.\u00a0 That\u2019s it. You don\u2019t have to get into any descriptive sentences, paragraph production, grammar, spelling, or anything else.<\/p>\n

If the student grumbles that he\/she doesn\u2019t know what to right, try to help.\u00a0 Ask, \u201cWhat color is the motorcycle?\u201d\u00a0 Of course, the student will say, \u201cIt is red.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You can think of other questions; just make sure that it is in a literal sense.\u00a0 Reluctant writers get too confused on all of the variables that take place when writing and usually end up saying, \u201cI\u2019m thinking,\u201d and the next thing you know twenty minutes have passed, and the student hasn\u2019t written a thing.<\/p>\n

After prompting the student, say, \u201cWrite, I see a red motorcycle.\u201d\u00a0 If the student asks for help with spelling or punctuation, then give it but don\u2019t offer it unless asked.\u00a0 Start with one sentence and then build up to five.\u00a0 Don\u2019t judge the content at this point, and don\u2019t pick at any mistakes.<\/p>\n

Simply celebrate that the student is writing on his\/her own, and know that in time you can get into paragraph development and the other mechanics of good writing.\u00a0 The start is getting the student to write his\/her own words without a fight or fuss.<\/p>\n

Like most academics, writing is a step-by-step process, and by breaking down those steps into bite sized pieces, learning success can be met.<\/p>\n
